The worst choice
They raced to transfer her possessions. They were all out of conscience. No difference, the ascetic and the immoral are alike, throwing their breath into a frantic race carrying happiness and misery. She was astonished to see this pious in the middle of a gang of oppressors lumped into a group of traitors.
Her crying eyes saw their hands snatching the wooden furniture covered with her joy like someone pulling nails from her hand. The first moments of her marriage, in addition to her memories that were killed by cowardice and betrayal. Her husband, his mother, his family, his relatives and his neighbors all chewed up her hope in life, so it turned into a gloomy funeral. Her husband stepped on his sacredness, violated his honor and betrayed his oath.
The crowd was stormed by Kazem Al-Saher’s voice emanating from the car, “I would be a king if you became my beloved.” She responded in amazement: Words only, merely words; “male” Sometimes is just a word on the ID card.
In the busy street, his righteous cousin tricked her into leaving without informing the police. He promised he would give her all her undiminished rights. The quiet softened hearted wife dreamed that the water would return to its previous flow: at first or at last, he is your husband and children’s father.
She left his cousin in her place guarding her money, but he averted his eyes from her. Instead, he gave a hand in smuggling her belongings!
He raised his voice: “Slower, be honest while carrying others’ belongings!”
They moved her furniture after midnight, cooperated in sin, carried their burdens and extra burdens. Nothing remained in the marital residence to indicate her presence.
She was given a choice: You have to choose between your children or give up your marital rights!
A more bitter choice than the bitter melon plant. She left her rights to live on the hidden pains of her weak children. She returned to her apartment which she had rented to cover her from the barrenness of life which had become known to the public. She was concerned about her future and time lashes had left their marks on her. Hunger gnawed at their stomachs, anxiety chased them and every hunter pursued her like prey.
Her husband does not care about his children misunderstanding that he is replacing what is inferior with what is better. He will be disappointed and get lost as long as he is unfair!
On luxurious furniture that he does not deserve, he will get married. His mother said that he would marry a virgin who had not been touched by anyone on the condition that she must be a doctor, so that poor woman might bury herself alive.
The news spread throughout the region. Her husband has replaced the beauty of life with ugliness, so she went to his house and said:
Life is short, my blood pressure rose till blood reached my brain. I almost died. I do not need you even though you promised not to let me down, but strangers’ looks haunt me and children’s difficult lessons block their way to success. Her husband turned around and said:
- I am too nervous man to deserve a great wife like you. I am a mechanic with the least amount of education. I have a very limited intellectual capacity, but you are a well educated engineer and a lady with a high esteem. You may be successful with an other person.
People heard her pleas in pain.
She returned dragging disappointment tails. She felt surprised by the footsteps following her, a man stood in front of her and she only heard his whisper: I am ready to throw the money under your feet, just try me.
God answered her calls at that time, one of the elders passed by. The harasser disappeared in front of Latifa who was accompanied to her house by this notable person. She thought that he had relieved her from the man who looks like a furious dog, but he tried to harass her himself!

تسابقوا في نقل متاعها، تخلى الجميع عن الضمير، لا فرق، الزاهد والفاسق، تمتزج أنفاسهم في سباق محموم، حملوا الأمنيات والخيبات. أذهلها رؤية هذا العابد وسط حشد من الظالمين، وقد حُشروا في زمرة الخائنين.
تأملت عينها الباكية أياديهم تخطف الأثاث الخشبي المغلف بفرحتها، كمن ينزع الأظافر من يدها، أول لحظات زواجها وذكرياتها التي قتلها الجبن والخذلان، الزوج وأمه وأهله وأقاربه وجيرانه مضغوا جميعًا أملها في الحياة، فتحولت إلى مأتم عزاء، وداس الزوج على لحمه وكشف ستره، وضيع الأمانة.
داهم الجمع صوت كاظم الساهر ينبعث من سيارة "ملك أنا لو تصبحين حبيبتي"؛ ردت في عجب: كلام في كلام، "ذكر" أحيانًا تكون مجرد كلمة في بطاقة الهوية.
في الشارع المكتظ بالناس، أوهمها ابن عمه الورع، أن تنصرف دون إبلاغ الشرطة، على وعد أن يأتيها بحقها غير منقوص، الزوجة الهادئة رق قلبها تحلم أن تعود المياه لسابق جريانها: في الأول والآخر أبو عيالك.
تركت ابن عمه مكانها يحرس مالها غير أنه صرف عينيه عنها ومد يد العون في تهريب متاعها!
علا صوته: بالراحة دا مال ناس!
نقلوا الأثاث بعد منتصف الليل، تعاونوا على الإثم، حملوا أوزارهم وأوزارًا معها، ولم يبق في مسكن الزوجية ما يدل على وجودها.
خُيرت: الأولاد أم حقوقك الزوجية؟
خيار أمرُّ من الحنظل، تترك الحقوق لتعيش على الآلام الدفينة مع الأطفال الضعيفة، عادت لشقتها التي استأجرتها لتسترها من عراء حياتها التي صارت مشاعًا على الألسن، همَّها مستقبلها، وتركت أسواط الزمن أثارًا عليها، ينهش الجوع في بطونهم، ويطاردهم القلق ويتعقبها كل صياد كالطريدة.
لا يُلقي لأبنائه بالًا، ولا يدري أنه يستبدل الذي هو أدنى بالذي هو خير، خاب وخسر!
على الأثاث الفاخر الذي لا يستحقه، سيتزوج . قالت الأم إنه سوف يتزوج بكرًا لم يمسسها بشر، وشرط تكون دكتورة، فلتبحث تلك المسكينة لنفسها عن مقبرة، وانتشر الخبر في أرجاء المنطقة، وبدَّل زوجها حُسن الحياة قبحًا، فخرجت تقصد بيته:
الحياة قصيرة، ارتفع الضغط لدي، ووصل الدم مخي، وكدت أموت، و لست في حاجة إليك برغم أنك أعطيتني وعدًا ألا تخذلني، لكن نظرات الأغراب تطاردني، و دروس الأولاد الصعبة تهدد نجاحهم، استدار الزوج وقال:
- أنا رجل عصبي للغاية، و لا أستحق زوجة عظيمة مثلك، أنا ميكانيكي، تعليمي بسيط وفكري محدود، لكنك مهندسة مثقفة بنت ناس، ربنا يوفقك مع غيري.
سمع الناس توسلاتها، يتحسرون.
عادت تجر أذيال الخيبة، فوجئت بوقع أقدام تتبعها، ثم وقف أمامها رجل، أو كأنه كذلك، لم تسمع له إلا همسًا : مستعد أرمي الفلوس تحت رجليك، قولي آه.
أجاب الله غوثها، ومر في تلك الأثناء أحد الكبراء، اختفى المتحرش من أمام لطيفة التي اصطحبها إلى باب بيتها هذا الوجيه، وظنت أنه أراحها من عواء ذلك الكلب، غير أنه فاقه نباحًا.
